Application

Start applying early. Don't wait until you’ve finished your degree or quit your job. Depending on the agency and your situation, it can take anywhere from four weeks to just under a year to complete the process.

So when should you apply? When it makes sense for you. Multiple recruit classes happen throughout the year, so anytime is a good time.

The process has integrity. It has to – the safety of citizens depends on it. Your success and fulfillment depends on it too. No one should start training if they aren't going to succeed.

So what can you expect? Here are some of the major steps in the application process.
  • Application Form – Along with a Personal Disclosure Form, this dives into what you're all about
  • Written testing – The Alberta Police Cognitive Abilities Test (APCAT) and the Alberta Communications Test (ACT) OR the RPAT (RCMP Police Aptitude Test)
  • Fitness and medical testing - Do you meet the standards? You’ll be put to the test
  • Interviews – First a one-on-one, then a behavioural-focused group interview
  • Polygraph test and Psychological Assessment – Just be honest and the interviewers will do the rest
  • Background and references check - With investigative experts at work, would you expect anything less?
  • Committee review – Your application file is reviewed and a committee determines if you're a suitable candidate
See why it takes a little while?
